Kosovo

AOMAA participated in two small scale rescues using our One-to-One Program. The first was an effort to rescue a handicapped family. Their house had been destroyed in the war, winter was coming on, the area where their tent was located was full of snakes. With and infant and 3 year old child, they didn’t have enough food or shelter to make it. AOMAA partnered with Handicapped International to get a new house built and to provide food, toys, and clothing for the family. We also purchased a cow for them with hay and all necessary equipment so they had milk for yogurt. With wheat for bread, and a sewing machine to earn some money as time went by, the family was given options that helped them survive, not just the winter, but to create a stable life.

When the Kosovo father of another family was diagnosed with a fast growing, deadly lung cancer, the hospital in Albania refused cancer care due to few resources. He was expected to have died within 3 months. With a grandchild on the way, he wanted to survive to see her and settle his affairs, at least. AOMAA collaborated with Froedert Memorial Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin who supplied free, state-of-the-art cancer care. Our patient survived three years, welcomed the child, had years with her and family, then died peacefully back home in Kosovo.
